Virtual African American Conference on Disabilities

As an Arizona DD Network event, the Arizona UCEDDs (Sonoran Center for Excellence in Disabilities & Institute for Human Development) are longtime supporters and collaborators of the Annual African American Conference on Disabilities. Register for the virtual preview to the 2024 conference celebrating Black History Month through four exciting sessions on February 14 – 15, 2024. The virtual event will raise scholarship funds for disabled individuals and families to attend the in-person conference on June 28, 2024.The second session on February 15, 2024, Advancing Disability Rights in Africa: Challenges, Opportunities, and the Role of International Exchange, is sponsored by AUCD Network member, Institute for Community Inclusion (Boston) Professionals Fellows Program.

Innovations and Connections Conference: Promoting Early Childhood Mental Wellness

Request for Information (RFI) on Severe Maternal Morbidity Measurement

Deadline: March 4, 2024
The Agency for Healthcare, Research, and Quality (AHRQ) Quality Indicators Program released an RFI on 2/1/24 in the Federal Register, entitled, “Inpatient Severe Maternal Morbidity Measure Technical Specifications.” The RFI seeks comments on the usability, feasibility, and likely uptake of a measure of severe maternal morbidity to be validated, refined, and maintained by the AHRQ Quality Indicators program, with the goal of providing state/local data for maternal health service improvements. They are particularly interested in hearing from states/regional/local health departments, researchers, maternal health advocates, providers/health systems, and payers.

Health Resources and Services Administration, Licensure Portability Grant Program

This notice announces the opportunity to apply for funding under the Licensure Portability Grant Program (LPGP). The purpose of the LPGP is to provide support for state professional licensing boards to carry out programs under which licensing boards of various states cooperate to develop and implement state laws and related policies that will reduce statutory and regulatory barriers to telehealth. Telehealth is defined by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) as the use of electronic information and telecommunication technologies to support long-distance clinical health care, patient and professional health-related education, health administration and public health. Technologies include video conferencing, the internet, store-and-forward imaging, streaming media, and terrestrial and wireless communications.

Administration for Community Living, Disability and Rehabilitation Research Projects (DRRP) Program: Health and Function (Development)

$500,000

The purpose of the Disability and Rehabilitation Research Projects (DRRP) is to plan and conduct research, demonstration projects, training, and related activities, including international activities, to develop methods, procedures, and rehabilitation technology that maximize the full inclusion and integration into society, employment, independent living, family support, and economic and social self-sufficiency of individuals with disabilities, especially individuals with disabilities who have the greatest support needs, and to improve the effectiveness of services authorized under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended (Rehabilitation Act). Under this particular DRRP priority, applicants must propose a development project that is aimed at improving the health and function of people with disabilities.

Administration for Community Living, Rehabilitation Engineering Research Centers (RERC) Program: RERC on Information and Communication Technologies Access

The purpose of the RERC program is to improve the effectiveness of services authorized under the Rehabilitation Act by conducting advanced engineering research on and development of innovative technologies that are designed to solve particular rehabilitation problems or to remove environmental barriers. RERCs also demonstrate and evaluate such technologies, facilitate service delivery system changes, stimulate the production and distribution of new technologies and equipment in the private sector, and provide training opportunities. The purpose of this particular RERC is to conduct research and development toward innovative technologies and strategies that will make information and communication technologies optimally accessible and usable for people with disabilities.

Health Resources and Services Administration, Maternal Health Training and Resource Center (MHTRC)

Award Ceiling:
$3,000,000

This notice announces the opportunity to apply for funding under the Maternal Health Training and Resource Center (MHTRC) program. The purpose of this program is to support MCHB’s maternal health recipients, with a primary focus on the State Maternal Health Innovation (State MHI) program, to improve maternal health and to respond to the needs of populations impacted by maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity (SMM). The MHTRC will also provide limited support to MCHB’s maternal health recipients with the implementation of maternal health projects, innovations, and initiatives in their respective states, where funds are available.

The Center on Disability Studies at the University of Hawaii Releases The Review of Disability Studies: An International Journal Special Issue Exploring Disability in China

The Center on Disability Studies, College of Education, University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, is pleased to announce the release of the Review of Disability Studies: An International Journal Special Issue on China and Disability. The 595-page issue (Volume 18, Issue 4 & Volume 19, Issue 1) was guest-edited by Drs. Luanjiao Hu, The Lurie Institute for Disability Policy, Brandeis University, and Fengming Cui, Harvard University.

Digital Equity and the Disability Ecosystem

State digital equity plans—programs that aim to ensure equitable access to broadband Internet across all communities—must collaborate with local, regional and national organizations to help close the digital divide. The Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT), an initiative funded by ODEP, just released a new resource to help the creators and implementors of state digital equity plans engage with organizations that empower people with disabilities to live, work and participate fully in their communities. 

New Publication Shares Myths and Facts Around AT in Education

The Office of Special Education Programs and the Office of Educational Technology at the Department of Education published Myths and Facts Surrounding Assistive Technology Devices and Services (PDF), a guidance document aimed at dispelling common misconceptions regarding assistive technology (AT). The document is designed to increase understanding of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) AT requirements, describe and dispel common myths about AT and how and when it should be deployed in schools, and provide examples of the use of AT devices and services for children with disabilities.

Podcast Series Highlights Long COVID Impacts on Employment

The Center For Disability-Inclusive Employment Policy Research announced the fourth season of the podcast Let's Get to Work: Reimagining Disability Inclusive Employment Policy, with a focus on people living with the long-term effects of COVID, or Long COVID. This season takes a deep dive into Long COVID and employment, with episodes about advocating for people with Long COVID, accommodations in the Long COVID era, connecting Long COVID to disability laws and policies promoting employment, and emerging research.
