Call for Comments - Ensuring Safe Accommodations for Air Travelers with Disabilities Using Wheelchairs
Deadline: Friday, April 29, 2024

The U.S. Department of Transportation is proposing to strengthen its rule implementing the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) to ensure passengers who use wheelchairs can travel safely and with dignity. The proposed rule would require that airlines do better in accommodating passengers with disabilities by setting new standards for prompt, safe, and dignified assistance, mandating enhanced training for airline employees and contractors who physically assist passengers with disabilities and handle passengers’ wheelchairs, and outlining actions that airlines must take to protect passengers when a wheelchair is damaged during transport. The proposed rule also clarifies that damaging or delaying the return of a wheelchair is an automatic violation of the ACAA.

Medical and Dental Curricula on IDD: Training Inclusive Providers

Past research has shown that many medical and dental students do not learn about IDD in school. The WITH Foundation, AUCD, and UC-LEND, led by Dr. Kashia Rosenau, collaborated to learn more about how medical and dental schools are teaching students about intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The study found that most of the schools had self-advocates to help them teach their medical and dental students about caring for patients with IDD. The study also found that medical and dental students want to learn more about caring for their patients with disabilities. Overall, the study highlights the importance of teaching medical and dental students about caring for patients with IDD and including more self-advocates in this training.

AHRQ Review: Respectful Maternity Care: Dissemination and
Implementation of Perinatal Safety

Culture to Improve Equitable Maternal Healthcare Delivery and Outcomes
Severe maternal morbidity and mortality is a significant public health issue in the United States, disproportionately affecting Black women. A new review from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), titled “Respectful Maternity Care: Dissemination and Implementation of Perinatal Safety Culture to Improve Equitable Maternal Healthcare Delivery and Outcomes,” aims to synthesize research on defining and measuring respectful maternity care (RMC). It describes RMC’s impact on health outcomes and strategies for implementation, particularly for populations at risk for health disparities.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

Each March, the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD), and our partners work together to create a social media campaign that highlights the many ways in which people with and without disabilities come together to form strong, diverse communities. The campaign seeks to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life, as well as awareness of the barriers that people with disabilities still sometimes face in connecting to the communities in which they live.

GAO Report: Autism Research and Support Services: Federal
Inter-agency Coordination and Monitoring Efforts Could Be Further Strengthened

To promote the health and well-being of people with autism, the National Institutes of Health helps coordinate the activities of 18 federal agencies—including research on contributing factors and training on how to screen patients for autism. NIH has followed several key practices to coordinate agency programs and activities but could do more. For example, NIH could track its progress toward goals to help agencies better allocate resources where they are most needed. And NIH could document how its Office of National Autism Coordination checks for unnecessary duplication of federal efforts across agencies.

LEAD Center - People with Disabilities in Good Jobs: Employment Success Stories

There are eight “Good Jobs” principles—ranging from fair pay and benefits to organizational culture and job security—that create a universal framework for job quality. These principles fit neatly with two important pillars of disability employment that benefit everyone: competitive integrated employment, or CIE, and universal design. When employees with disabilities and other barriers to employment receive the right supports, they, along with their employers, thrive. Read real-life success stories from the ODEP-funded National Center on Leadership for the Employment and Economic Advancement of People with Disabilities (LEAD Center) that show the Good Jobs principles in action.
