They will work with AUCD’s Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Special Interest Group (SIG), a core workgroup (stakeholder engagement, knowledge translation, and quality) and with their UCEDD and/or LEND program to spread information about the work of the NAAC. Applications must be received by April 15th. The project starts May 1 and ends September 30, 2024. Please apply at this link, and reach out to Sarah Swanson (sarah.swanson@unmc.edu) for any questions.

Call for Comments: FDA Proposal To Ban Electrical Stimulation Devices for Self-Injurious or Aggressive Behavior

Deadline: May 28, 2024

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA, the Agency, or we) is proposing to ban electrical stimulation devices (ESDs) intended for self-injurious behavior (SIB) or aggressive behavior (AB). FDA has determined these devices present an unreasonable and substantial risk of illness or injury that cannot be corrected or eliminated by labeling. This proposal follows a court decision vacating a prior ban and amendment to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act clarifying our authority to ban a device for one or more intended uses. This action, if finalized, will mean ESDs for SIB and AB are adulterated and not legally marketed.

Employment Opportunities Across the Network

The AUCD Employment page focuses on job and fellowship opportunities at AUCD, within our Network, and at organizations affiliated with AUCD. If you think your organization is an affiliated partner, please contact Anna Costalas. Positions will remain on the website for 90 days.

ACL Blog: A World of Opportunities: Promoting Augmentative and Alternative Communication

There is great diversity in the ways people communicate with one another. Many people with communication disabilities successfully use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to interact and connect with the world. AAC can be an app on a device for generating speech, gestures, or body language — or someone who repeats what a person is saying, typing, and spelling — to name just a few of the forms it can take. Too many people who could benefit from AAC do not have access to it. There are many reasons for this, including a lack of information and awareness about AAC tools and strategies and a lack of training and support in how to use AAC. There is enormous potential for more people to gain access to AAC; that’s why ACL is investing in a collaborative, multiphase initiative to increase both awareness of and access to AAC. The new project, which is led by the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD), will focus on improving and maximizing peer learning to increase awareness and use of AAC. In collaboration with CommunicationFirst and the University Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service (UCEDD) at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), AUCD will explore how peer to peer (P2P) models can be used to promote access to and increase the use of AAC.

All of Us Research: 275 Million Genetic Variants Identified in NIH Precision Medicine Data

Researchers have discovered more than 275 million previously unreported genetic variants, identified from data shared by nearly 250,000 participants of the National Institutes of Health’s All of Us Research Program. Half of the genomic data are from participants of non-European genetic ancestry. The unexplored cache of variants provides researchers new pathways to better understand the genetic influences on health and disease, especially in communities who have been left out of research in the past. The findings are detailed in Nature, alongside three other articles in Nature journals. “All of Us values intentional community engagement to ensure that populations historically underrepresented in biomedical research can also benefit from future scientific discoveries,” said Karriem Watson, Chief Engagement Officer of the All of Us Research Program. “This starts with building awareness and improving access to medical research so that everyone has the opportunity to participate.”

Collaborative Health Care for Individuals with Intellectual and/or
Developmental Disabilities

The challenges people with disabilities experience when receiving health care services or participating in programs that promote health are monumental and can be overwhelming. Often multiple barriers make it extremely difficult or even impossible for people with disabilities to access and effectively receive healthcare. This Public Health Live will provide a background on overall health for people with disabilities, describe barriers faced by people with disabilities, and address how small changes within a provider’s office, engagement with patients, and collaboration with partners can improve healthcare for people with disabilities. Specific focus is placed on people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.
