AUCD Leadership Academy - Shaping the future of disability

AUCD Leadership Academy

Applications close on Monday, March 3, 2025.

AUCD and the Center for Leadership in Disability (CLD) are proud to present the 8th Annual AUCD Leadership Academy. The AUCD Leadership Academy is a week-long intensive experience, paired with a year of pre and post interactions designed to enhance the skills of current and emerging leaders from disability networks to build coalitions to improve systems of supports and services. The Leadership Academy engages participants from UCEDDs, LENDs, IDDRCs and the wider community of disability partners to come together to immerse themselves for a week of study, shared experiences, self-evaluation, and skill development.

WebAIM Celebrates 25 Years of Improving Access to Information

This year, the Institute for Disability Research, Policy & Practice’s WebAIM is celebrating 25 years of improving web accessibility. It's been an exciting two and a half decades of history in Utah State University’s Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services. Jared Smith, the current WebAIM director, has been with the organization for 24 of its 25 years. In that time, he has seen awareness of accessibility take off.

Celebrating 10 Years of the ABLE Act

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the ABLE Act, a groundbreaking law that allows individuals with disabilities to save money in tax-advantaged ABLE accounts without affecting their eligibility for essential benefits like Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The University of Cincinnati Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCCEDD) has a unique connection to this milestone: Anne Gerhardt, the daughter of UCCEDD's policy specialist Jane Gerhardt, was the first person to open a STABLE (Ohio's ABLE) account in the country.

Karen Hammar Named Director of Iowa’s Center for Disabilities and Development

Karen Hammar has been named Director of Iowa's Center for Disabilities and Development, home to Iowa's UCEDD, LEND Program, and IDDRC.

In November, Karen Hammar, MHA, MOT, OTR/L, FACHE, was named Director of the Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD), home base for Iowa’s UCEDD and LEND Program, the Hawk-IDDRC, and the Alfred Healy Clinic, where Iowans with disabilities receive a variety of clinical services. Hammar had served as CDD’s interim director since the beginning of 2024, while she continued to manage clinical operations. Throughout 2024, she led CDD through an eventful year, with a focus on unifying leadership and staff.

Understudied but ‘Significant Public Health Issue’ FXTAS is Focus of First-of-Its-Kind Research at KU

A new research project at the University of Kansas Life Span Institute will focus on increasing understanding of which premutation carriers will develop FXTAS during middle or later adulthood, and why. The hope is that this information will help prevent the disease or advance treatments when it is in its earliest stages. 

MI DDI Michigan Developmental Disabilities Institute

Michigan Developmental Disabilities Institute Awarded $99,000 Grant for Health Equity Training on Disability and Aging in Communities of Color

The Michigan Developmental Disabilities Institute (MI-DDI) at Wayne State University recently received a $99,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) based in Princeton, New Jersey. MI-DDI’s awarded project will design, implement and evaluate a health equity training curriculum for primary care health professionals and trainees. The focus of the training will be on the intersection of disability and aging in communities of color.

Center on Disability and Development iGROW Program Fall Semester 2024-2025 Activities

This fall, the iGROW program completed a total of 181 Next Up lessons, experienced five field trips, participated in four enrichment activities, and held five parent trainings and three Project Advisory Committee meetings. The iGROW Central Texas cohorts were busy with field trips in November.

Disabling Fear: Parental Risk-Tolerance in Play for Children with Disabilities

Children with disabilities (CWD) face a heightened risk of mental health challenges, demanding urgent attention. Despite the recognized significance of play for mental well-being, limited research explores the role of play, especially risky play, in CWD. This study investigates parental perspectives on risky play in CWD and its links to child playfulness, parent–child relationships, and problem symptoms.

Guide on Collaborative Research Partnerships

RTC: Rural researchers present advice on collaborative and participatory research projects with Centers for Independent Living (CILs) based on work with CIL partners. The guide includes feedback and priorities from CIL staff on the most effective conditions to address when entering into a research partnership

“I Like Going to College Because I am Learning How to be Independent:” Think College Explores the Benefits of Postsecondary Education for Students with Disability

In 2024, students with intellectual and developmental disabilities are more prepared and have more inclusive options for continuing their education after high school than ever before. ICI Think College staffers Meg Grigal, Clare Papay, and Caitlyn Bukaty co-authored a chapter in the International Review of Research in Developmental Disabilities with colleagues Sara Jo Soldovieri and Beth Myers from Syracuse University titled “Benefits of Postsecondary Education Experiences for Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disability."

Rise: A Data-Driven Approach to Hire and Retain Staff

For the past 15 years, ICI has been publishing the Service Provider Promising Practices series, which illustrates how community rehabilitation providers implement best practices and improve integrated employment outcomes. The latest Promising Practice brief, "Rise: A Data-Driven Approach to Hire and Retain Staff," demonstrates how a Minnesota-based nonprofit, Rise, implemented new hiring and retention practices to target potential employees in untapped applicant pools.

ArizonaLEND Alum, Katrina Jean Shares Her Research on Evaluating School-Based Mental Health Care Access and Associated Academic Outcomes for Elementary Students in Pima County

Katrina Jean, ArizonaLEND Alum (2023-2024), is a doctoral candidate in the Educational Psychology program at the University of Arizona. Her current research is focused on evaluating school-based mental health care access in Pima County elementary schools and the associated outcomes in academic achievement.

Revealing OT’s Role in Mental Health

Occupational therapist Alyssa Mason (MN LEND 2020-21) told educators, mental health workers, case managers, and others at a recent conference that young children who have experienced trauma may need help with sensory processing strategies in addition to mental health support.

The Spectrum of Developmental Disabilities XLVI: The Many Flavors of ADHD

The Gatlinburg Conference on Research and Theory in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities is one of the premier conferences for behavioral scientists conducting research on intellectual and developmental disabilities. It has a rich history that started in Gatlinburg, Tennessee in 1967, and the name of its original location remained. Each year, Gatlinburg Conference brings together scientists from around the world to gather to discuss research and collaborations in the field.

Charting the LifeCourse Showcase 2025

During the sessions, people who use Charting the LifeCourse (CtLC) Framework, family members, and professionals will share practical solutions and strategies for using CtLC in their daily lives and across many levels of change. Sessions will provide hands-on learning opportunities or direct application and encourage collaboration.
